The Kinkei Room has hosted a wealth of events, from the Meiji Emperor's Imperial Family celebrations and banquets in honor of Japan's three major holidays to diplomatic meals with foreign dignitaries.
The 250 golden pheasants ("kinkei" in Japanese) decorating the walls amidst a scattering of peonies are lucky birds, prized as bearers of auspicious tidings in ancient China. These priceless paintings, which originally date to the 14th year of the Meiji Era (1881), have been individually restored by leading Japanese muralists using traditional methods. The windows look out to a garden that provides a beautiful view both day and night and gives a sense of openness to this traditional venue, scene of historic events and ceremonies throughout the centuries and now a popular setting for wedding ceremonies.
